Lent Devotional • Day 32

Day 32: Thursday, April 7

Fifth Week of Lent: “Be Like Jesus with Power in the Holy Spirit”

Today’s Truth that Transforms:

“The Holy Spirit Gives You Authority…Use It”

Scripture from Luke and Matthew

After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. 16 “Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; but whoever rejects me rejects him who sent me.” (Lu 10)

16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”(Matt 28)

How are we “Transformed in Christ” and shaped to be more like Him?

Jesus’ authority for His earthly mission grew out of His relationship with the Heavenly Father, particularly the intimacy that He experience with God. That is why we see Jesus pausing from time to time to hear from His Father before certain decisions or directions. If Jesus was operating from the Father’s authority and then left this world, what do you think He left for His followers? Authority!? Right! Jesus passes to His followers the authority to act in His name. It carries authority. This is the very power of God entrusted to the church so that Jesus’ work of rescue would continue as the church makes disciples! You have authority to use Jesus’ name to minister His love to your world! Use it!

How do you see this “Truth that Transforms” working in your life?

The following is an application story written by Kayla Marty. After you read it, ask yourself the same question. “How do I see this ‘Truth that Transforms’ working in my life?

When I was first out of college, before I was married, I had the privilege of house sitting for a very nice family.  Their house was bigger and more extravagant than I was used to after growing up on a farm.  They had larger TVs than I had ever seen, they had food in the fridge I wasn’t used to eating, they had shower with 5 heads, and a large in-home gym with free weights, aerobic machines, and more.  I remember after my first stay in their house, the owners returned excited to see what I enjoyed about their house!  But I told them I had not utilized any of their amenities because I didn’t feel right because it wasn’t my house.  The owners were disappointed that I wasn’t able to enjoy all the luxuries of their house.  They genuinely wanted to share them with me.  During future stays at their house, I made sure to take full advantage of what they wanted to share.

Sometimes I think our faith life is like this.  In Matthew, Jesus said all authority has been given to us, but we don’t know if we can or should take advantage of that authority or power.  But God gives us His power and authority lavishly and wants us to take full advantage of it as we further his mission in his kingdom.
