Day 14: Thursday, March 17
Second Week of Lent: “Be Like Jesus with a Secure Identity”
Today’s Truth that Transforms:
“Use Your Authority in Christ”
Scripture from Matthew, Luke and John
But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, take your mat and go home.” 7 Then the man got up and went home. 8 When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to man. (Matt. 9)
16 “Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; but whoever rejects me rejects him who sent me.” 19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. 20 However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” (Luke 10)
Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. (John 16)
How are we “Transformed in Christ” and shaped to be more like Him?
When God created Adam, Eve, and all of humankind, we were given the responsibility of authority over this world. We were God’s representatives to rule this world. It is obvious to see ways that power has been misused by a sinful world. But Jesus is very intentional about this authority of ruling in a new kingdom, the one He establishes in His work on earth. He speaks of having the authority to lay down His life to establish this kingdom. He passes this authority to us. It is a kingdom authority that calls on God to act to bring His rescue. It has with it the power of forgiving sins as we announce what Jesus has done. Our new life in Christ? It is meant for us to call upon the authority we have been given in Jesus’ name. We are his representatives bringing His kingdom to this world.
How do you see this “Truth that Transforms” working in your life?
The following is an application story written by Cheryl Theimer. After you read it, ask yourself the same question. “How do I see this ‘Truth that Transforms’ working in my life?
When in a situation that feels like spiritual warfare, my biggest weapon is prayer. But it is even more powerful to prayer walk in the physical place the enemy is attacking. I remind myself that what I do in the physical world can have consequence in what is happening in the spiritual world. Wherever I walk, I am walking as an ambassador or herald with the authority of Jesus to advance His Kingdom on earth. Jesus has already won the war over evil with His life, death and resurrection. And I have His resurrection power to declare the defeat of the enemy by calling on the power of His name because He says so. God gives us the same authority that He gave Jesus to defeat Satan. I can have confidence that I walk as a representative of the King and wear His coat of armor. The battle belongs to Him over any situation I might face. I can believe God is who He says He is, King of the Universe. He has power do what He says He can because He is Creator and is the authority over all things. I am who He says I am: a child of God, daughter of the King, co-heir with Christ. In the heavenly world, I sit with Him at the right hand of God. And I can do all things through Him who gives me strength. Greater is He who is in me, than He who is in the world (1 John 4:4).
