The Daniel Dilemma

Break the Ice

Of what do you have the most memorabilia/possessions/apparel/etc.? Think about bands, sports teams, TV shows, brands, restaurants, etc.

Key Passage: Deuteronomy 6:13-15

“Fear the Lord your God, serve Him only and take your oaths in His name. Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you; for the Lord your God, who is among you, is a jealous God and His anger will burn against you, and He will destroy you from the face of the land.”

  • What’s happening in the context of this passage?
  • How does this passage relate to the first commandment (Deuteronomy 5:7)?
  • How does this passage apply to our lives today?

Have 2-3 members share takeaways from their GO last week.

  1. What are the idols you worship in your life? Think about what consumes most of your time, thoughts, affection, money, and loyalty: work, relationships, sports teams, hobbies, studies, etc.
  2. Exodus 20: 3 says, “You shall have no other gods before me. Is the first commandment a struggle for you to accept and put into action? Why or why not?
  3. Chris Hodges writes that, “You’ll never be satisfied, empowered for your purpose, or fulfilled in your life as long as you worship anything other than God.” How have you found this to be true (or false, if you disagree) in your life?
  4. The Bible repeatedly mentions three false idols, three counterfeit gods: the spirit of mammon (power and greed), Baal (power and pride), and Asherah (pleasure). What false idol do you struggle the most with? Why does this idol have such a strong pull on your life?
  5. What comes to mind when you read Deuteronomy 6:14-15 and hear that God is “jealous”?
  6. Do you give God the first of everything in your life? If so, what tactics have you taken to do so? If not, why not?
  7. What do you think Jesus means when he references “true worshippers” in John 4:23?
  8. Do you consider yourself a “true worshipper”? Why or why not?
  9. How would your life look different if each decision you made began with, “In the beginning God…”?

  • What are some different ways you can put God first this week? Consider your work, personal life, finances, relationships, etc.
  • What will you do to make each decision with the mindset of “In the beginning, God…”?
  • Identify some areas of your life that you’ve put above God and take intentional steps to move them down in the pecking order.
